Friday Market Snapshot | 9 January 2026
The first full trading week of 2026 is in the books. Gold is holding firm, the dollar is flexing, and equities are showing signs of rotation. Here’s what moved markets this week and what’s worth watching next.
Gold: Consolidating Strength
Gold is trading around $4,460–$4,470 per ounce, dipping slightly on Friday after commodity index rebalancing and a firmer US dollar ahead of key jobs data. Prices remain about $110 below the late-December record high but are set for a weekly gain as traders balance safe-haven demand with profit-taking.
Safe-haven demand continues to underpin prices amid geopolitical uncertainty, including US involvement in Venezuela. Meanwhile, commodity index rebalancing and dollar strength have applied short-term pressure. Major bank forecasts from HSBC still see potential for gold to reach approximately $5,000 per ounce in 2026 under elevated risk scenarios.
Short-term outlook:
Neutral-bullish. Price is consolidating after strong 2025 gains.
US Dollar: Testing Multi-Week Highs
The US Dollar Index is near 98.9, approaching a multi-week high after strengthening through Thursday and Friday. Markets are positioning ahead of today’s December Non-Farm Payrolls and a pending Supreme Court ruling on tariff powers.
Stronger dollar sentiment this week has been driven by macro positioning ahead of jobs data, with Fed futures signalling a high probability that rates stay unchanged at the next FOMC meeting.
Market implication:
A firmer dollar tends to cap gold and other commodities whilst boosting yield-driven sectors.
Equities: Rotation in Play
US equity markets showed mixed performance this week with notable rotation among sectors. The S&P 500 has been relatively flat in recent sessions after reaching record highs earlier in the week. Tech stocks have weakened whilst defence and small-cap stocks saw strength. The Dow Jones remains elevated near 49,000, with the S&P 500 still holding near prior record levels.
Market tone: Breadth is improving as sector leadership broadens beyond mega-cap tech.
What to Watch Next Week
Today’s NFP and unemployment data will be unpacked over the weekend, with traders watching for implications on Fed policy direction. Fed commentary through the week will matter, particularly any hawkish versus dovish nuance that could shift rates and equities. Mid-month CPI inflation data arrives and will be essential for gauging the growth versus bond market dynamic. Geopolitical developments remain in focus, notably US foreign policy moves and trade rulings.
